Corrosion occurs when steel rusts and steel sections can either by designed to have a design life to allow for this corrosion or be protected against corrosion by the use of cathodic protection. Cathodic protection is mainly used to protect steel structures buried in the ground or immersed in water. Cathodic protection is mainly used to protect steel piles for foundations, harbour structures, hulls of boats and ships, offshore platforms and steel storage tanks. Essentially an sacrificial anode is attached to the metal to be protected with the result that corrosion in effect occurs at the attached anode which in turn can be replaced when necessary. Metals commonly used for cathodic protection systems include alloys of zinc, aluminium and magnesium.
